Huge Asteroid to Pass Earth Tonight

Huge Asteroid to Pass Earth Tonight

A giant asteroid will make a flyby of Earth over the next few days. The asteroid 4179 Toutatis is about 3 miles wide and will come within 4.3 million miles of Earth during its closest approach around 9 o’clock tonight (GMT).

It should be close enough to get a great view through a telescope, but for those of us without a scope we can watch the flyby at http://events.slooh.com/

Toutatis is listed as a potential hazardous object, meaning that it could pose a threat to our planet at some point in the future, however the flyby tonight poses no threat.
