Magnification vs Aperture

Magnification vs Aperture

When I set out looking for a beginners telescope, I initially thought OK whats the biggest magnification I can get for my money. I was surprised to find out that its aperture not magnification that is the most important thing when it comes to astronomy telescopes.

Aperture is the diameter of the telescopes lens or mirror, the bigger the aperture the more light the telescope can gather, and the more light you can gather the brighter and more detailed your image will be.

Another thing I have seen mentioned on many sites is to stay away from telescopes that try to sell themselves with their magnification. Aperture is king. So in simple terms the fatter the telescope the better.
